CHELMSFORD MAN ORDERED TO UNDERGO ALCOHOL TREATMENT AFTER BRUTAL DOG ATTACK
A drunken thug who lifted up his ex-girlfriend's puppy by its lead and then whipped it in the street has been ordered to undergo alcohol treatment.On a Saturday night in a town center, James Gilbert, aged 32, launched an "uncontrollable attack" on the helpless six-month-old dog until he was tackled by authorities.
Witnesses described how he was whipping the dog, lifting it to his head level, and beating it in an uncontrolled manner.
An onlooker stated, "He was whipping the dog, lifted it up to his head level, and started to beat it uncontrollably." The incident left onlookers sickened, with one saying, "I was so upset that no one was there to help stop this horrible drunk male." The attack was caught on CCTV in Chelmsford, Essex, prompting council staff to intervene as Gilbert punched one of them.
Police were called, Gilbert was arrested and charged with animal cruelty and assault.
The puppy managed to flee in terror and was rescued afterward.
Gilbert, who lives in Chelmsford, admitted to animal cruelty and assault, which occurred on July 26.
He was sentenced to 40 days of rehabilitation activities, alcohol treatment as part of 24 months of community service, and participation in a Building Better Relationships program.
He was also ordered to pay £100 compensation to the male victim, £340 court costs, and a £60 victim surcharge.
The dog was left shaken but unharmed, with police confirming there were no serious injuries.
