PAISLEY MAN RECEIVES LIFE FOR VIOLENT RAPE IN GLASGOW
A man from Paisley has been sentenced to a life sentence for a brutal rape.James Campbell, aged 32, admitted to raping a 57-year-old woman on August 16 of the previous year after she stopped to check on him as he was begging in Buchanan Street.
The assault occurred around 6:30 pm in an alley between West Nile Street and Nelson Mandela Place in Glasgow.
The victim, who weighed only six stones, struggled and asked Campbell to stop, but he continued until police arrived, having been alerted by a nearby solicitor.
The attack was captured on CCTV and depicted as graphic, showing the woman and offender in a state of partial undress.
Prosecutor Angela Gray described the incident as serious and violent.
Campbell, who dressed in Celtic football gear and draped in an Irish tricolour, had been begging daily, making between £40 and £100.
He was found with fresh scratch marks on his thighs and told police, "She wanted rough sex, so I gave it to her." Campbell has been on the Sex Offenders’ Register since his arrest and is currently detained since August last year.
The judge, Lady Stacey, imposed a Lifelong Restriction Order—similar to a life sentence—stating Campbell posed a danger to the public and emphasized the need for ongoing assessment and treatment.
The court noted the severity of the assault and the victim's distress.
