GRIMSBY MAN JAILED FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND COERCIVE BEHAVIOR
A Grimsby classic car restorer, Jack Standley, aged 28, has been sentenced after being found guilty of multiple incidents of domestic violence and coercive behavior. The court heard that he used his childhood sweetheart "as a punchbag," leaving her in such fear that she believed she would face daily assault.
Evidence revealed violent outbursts whenever they met, including Standley driving at high speed towards a brick wall after unfastening her seatbelt, causing her to fear for her life.
Prosecutor Laura Marshall detailed how Standley, who has known his partner since they were 14 and rekindled their relationship in 2020, displayed increasingly aggressive behavior.
She recounted instances where he punched her in the face during an argument at her mother's house, which was witnessed by her family, and two months later headbutted her, resulting in a black eye.
Additionally, he engaged in reckless driving, unfastening her seatbelt before driving at a wall, which terrified her.
Standley also called her 20-30 times daily and sent 246 abusive voicemail messages between September 16 and 20.
Despite her distress, including sitting with her grandmother during her final days, Standley continued to hurl abuse and make demands over the phone.
A court recording played to the trial contained vile threats and insults.
Standley admitted to assault, coercive and controlling behavior, and criminal damage.
His solicitor stated he was remorseful and that lockdown and personal issues, including overcoming cannabis addiction, had impacted his mental health.
The judge sentenced him to 27 months in prison and imposed a four-year restraining order preventing contact with the victim or approaching within 200 yards of her residence.
The sentence underscores the court's view that Standley's actions were degrading, humiliating, and set out to cause his partner misery and fear.
