IVAN COATES SENTENCED TO TEN YEARS IN PRISON FOR RAPE IN TUNSTALL NEAR CATTARICK GARRISON
In a case that has shocked the local community of Tunstall near Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire, Ivan Victor Coates, aged 66, has been handed a substantial prison sentence of ten years after admitting to serious sexual offenses involving a teenage girl. The court proceedings, held at Leeds Crown Court, revealed the disturbing details of Coates’s crimes, which spanned over a period of approximately eight to ten months during the early 1990s.Prosecutor Jonathan Carroll outlined how Coates systematically manipulated his young victim by offering her alcohol, which facilitated the assaults. The girl, whose identity remains protected, eventually confided in her mother about the abuse. However, it was only last year that she felt able to pursue legal action against Coates, highlighting the long-lasting trauma she endured. Since then, she has undergone counseling to help her cope with the emotional scars left by the ordeal.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Rodney Grant described Coates’s actions as “wicked” and emphasized the serious risk he poses to young girls in the community. The court found that the offences were not isolated incidents but part of a disturbing pattern of conduct, including six additional counts of rape. The judge noted that Coates’s crimes constituted a “course of conduct” that deeply violated the victim’s trust and safety.
Defense lawyer Sarah Wright attempted to present a different side of Coates, emphasizing his longstanding relationships within the community of Tunstall and the support he has from his wife. Wright stated, “He has sustained the friendship and loyalty of people in his community for many years. He also has the support of his wife, who will have to bear the brunt of his custodial sentence alone. His guilty plea shows a willingness to face up to what he has done.”
Despite these arguments, Judge Grant highlighted the severity of the crimes, taking into account Coates’s age and his decision to plead guilty. The judge underscored the importance of public safety, especially considering the victim’s youth and the grooming process that preceded the assaults. The court also noted the trauma experienced by the girl and the fact that Coates had been convicted of multiple counts of rape.
As part of his sentence, Coates has been ordered to register as a sex offender and is now prohibited from working with children. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by individuals who abuse positions of trust, and it has left the community of Tunstall and Catterick Garrison with a sense of relief that justice has been served.
