Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard he also encouraged her to send pictures and talked about meeting her.
But officers instead turned up at the defendant's home and arrested him.
Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court sentenced him to a two-year community order.
The 40-year-old was made the subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) for five years and placed on the sex offenders' register for the same period.
Prosecutor Salek Ahmed said the defendant engaged in communication with an undercover officer on the Chatiw platform before moving to Kik.
Mr.
Ahmed stated: "The undercover officer informed the defendant she was aged 12.
The defendant stated he was 40-years-old.
During the course of the conversation, the defendant encouraged the sending of pictures and talked about meeting her.
Examples of messages he sent included, 'Show me how naughty you are'.
There were particularly graphic messages." Officers attended the defendant's home on February 3, where he was arrested and devices were seized.
Hawkes, of Broomhill Street, pleaded guilty to attempted sexual communication with a child.
Stuart Muldoon, mitigating, said Hawkes feels "ashamed, sick and disgusted" that he could have communicated with somebody he believed to be 12 years old.
He added Hawkes is of previous good character and voluntarily stopped communicating.
The court noted some cognitive defects and that police had visited him several times to ensure no further offending.
Hawkes must complete an accredited Building Choices programme, a 12-month mental health requirement, a 15-day rehabilitation activity, and 120 hours of unpaid work.
Judge Richard McConaghy emphasized the seriousness of the offense and the potential impact on a minor, noting that Hawkes denied any sexual attraction to children despite his actions.
He stated that the probation officer believes Hawkes can be worked with to address his behavior.
