IAN THOMAS OF BROMSGROVE AVOIDS PRISON DESPITE POSSESSING OVER 230 INDECENT IMAGES OF CHILDREN
In August 2012, a man from Bromsgrove named Ian Thomas, aged 43 and residing on East Road, was spared imprisonment despite being found with over 230 indecent images and films of children. Judge Michael Dudley told Thomas that the images involved the "terrible exploitation" of minors, but he believed it was in the public's best interest for Thomas to receive help and support rather than jail time.During the court proceedings at Wolverhampton Crown Court, Judge Dudley stated, "Once this case came to light, you did everything within your power to get assistance for what you did." Thomas admitted to four charges of producing indecent images of children. As part of his sentence, he was placed under Supervision for three years with the condition that he attend the Sex Offenders Treatment programme. Moreover, he was ordered to register as a Sex Offender for five years, was made subject to an indefinite Sex Offenders Protection Order, and was permanently barred from working with children.
Prosecutor Mr. Howard Searle explained that police officers, acting on information, conducted a raid on Thomas' former home in Wolverhampton and seized his computer equipment. The investigation revealed he possessed 231 indecent images, including one rated at level four—the second-highest severity category—along with 10 moving images.
When questioned, Thomas told officers he had been interested in girls aged between 10 and 16, but some images depicted children as young as four and six. He also admitted to deleting some images, claiming he did so because he felt guilty, and police confirmed that the images were for personal use and had not been distributed.
Defence lawyer Miss Amanda Tompkins noted that Thomas had already taken steps to address his behavior, which had previously cost him his marriage and threatened his employment. "Life has dramatically changed for him," she said, emphasizing that Thomas recognized he needed help.
