FORMER SOLDIER IAN STANWAY JAILED FOR STRANGULATION OF PARTNER
Ian Stanway, who is a former soldier, received a 27-month jail sentence after he carried out a frightening assault on his partner, during which he choked her in her home.Court proceedings detailed that he grasped her neck, threw her to the ground, and continued applying pressure with both hands.
At one stage, he pressed his fingers against her eyes before strangling her again, causing her to fear for her life.
Despite his sneering attitude during the attack, she managed to break free.
The incident took place around 12:30 am on November 16, 2022, with Stanway, under the influence of alcohol after drinking eleven drinks, also threatening to reveal her location to her former abusive partner.
Prosecutor Simon Longworth drew attention to Stanway’s violent past and previous convictions.
Although he served four years in the Army and was considered at low risk of reoffending, the judge described him as a coward and an entrenched domestic abuser who became more violent when drinking.
The court granted a five-year restraining order and condemned the act of strangulation as abhorrent, stating that individuals convicted of such conduct deserved imprisonment.
The woman has since changed her residence, reduced social contacts, and is on anti-depression medication, expressing her fear that she is at constant risk and that Stanway might kill her if she encounters him again.
