BRACKNELL MAN IAN PHILLIPS ESCAPES JAIL AFTER SENDING OFFENSIVE MESSAGE AND POSSESSING CHILD AND ANIMAL INDECENT IMAGES

In a case that has shocked the local community of Bracknell, Ian Phillips, a 58-year-old man residing in Keepers Coombe, narrowly avoided imprisonment after being convicted of multiple serious offenses involving a minor and indecent material. The incident dates back to May 2019, when Phillips was arrested following a series of disturbing revelations about his conduct.

Phillips, who previously worked as a minibus driver, had a long-standing connection with a girl who was under his care. Over the years, he transported her to school in a minibus along with other children, establishing a routine that lasted for approximately five years. During this period, he was able to obtain her mobile number, ostensibly to communicate about changes in school schedules or lift arrangements, which he later exploited.

The troubling events resurfaced when, in February 2019, Phillips located the girl’s Facebook profile after he had ceased driving her to school. He reportedly noticed that she had grown into a woman, which seemed to have prompted a shift in his behavior. According to court reports, Phillips sent her a message that was initially benign but gradually became more inappropriate and alarming. The message read: “Hey sexy girl, how are you? Can I kidnap you and tie you up?”

The girl, who was described as having special needs, was reportedly shocked and distressed by the message. She confided in her carers, prompting an immediate police investigation. Law enforcement officials seized Phillips’s mobile phone and computer devices, which revealed a disturbing collection of over 50 indecent images and videos depicting children and animals. These materials included both photographs and videos, highlighting the extent of his possession of illegal content.

In May 2019, Phillips was formally arrested and taken into custody. During the subsequent court proceedings, the prosecution, led by Jack Wright, detailed the nature of Phillips’s offenses, emphasizing the offensive message sent to the girl and the possession of illicit images. The defense, represented by Andrew Storch, argued that Phillips believed his actions were a joke, citing his long history of driving the girl to school and his access to her contact details. Storch also claimed that Phillips had expressed remorse over his actions and recognized their inappropriateness.

Storch explained that Phillips thought he was making a joke at the time, believing that the girl would understand it as such. He also noted that Phillips had shown regret over the past two years and understood the severity of his misconduct. Despite these arguments, the court found the evidence compelling and the offenses serious.

Judge Edward Burgess delivered the verdict, acknowledging the vulnerability of the girl and the gravity of Phillips’s actions. The judge stated, “The girl was someone you knew and you knew she was a vulnerable age. I have no doubt you entertained real sexual fantasies about her. Whether you intended to act on these fantasies is unknown.”

As a result, Phillips was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for 18 months, for five counts of making indecent photographs of a child, possessing an extreme pornographic image of an animal, and sending an offensive message. Additionally, he was ordered to undertake various rehabilitation courses aimed at preventing future offending. The court also imposed a sexual harm prevention order for seven years and a restraining order preventing him from contacting the girl for five years.

Phillips appeared at Reading Crown Court on Thursday, May 13, to receive his sentence after pleading guilty to the charges. The case has raised concerns about safeguarding vulnerable individuals and the importance of monitoring individuals with a history of such offenses in the Bracknell area.
