IAN JOHNSTONE FROM SALINE AND DUNNING FACES COURT OVER ANIMAL CRUELTY IN FIFE AND PERTHSHIRE
Ian Johnstone, a 49-year-old farmer residing at Cadgerford Farm in Saline, Fife, has been subjected to legal action and fined over £1,150 due to charges of animal cruelty. The case centers around the neglect of a flock of sheep, which led to severe health issues and suffering among the animals.According to reports, the neglected sheep developed a serious infection that caused their wool to fall off, leaving them vulnerable and in distress. The animals' condition went unnoticed for some time until a vigilant animal inspector, conducting routine observations from a vantage point across a field at Pitcairns Farm in Dunning, Perthshire, spotted the suffering sheep.
One particular sheep was found to be suffering from a severe eye infection that had progressed to the point of affecting its brain, ultimately necessitating euthanasia to prevent further suffering. The inspector’s discovery prompted an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the animals' care.
Ian Johnstone appeared before Perth Sheriff Court to face charges of animal cruelty. During the proceedings, he admitted to two counts of neglect and cruelty towards the sheep. Johnstone explained that he had enlisted the help of a local man to check on the flock every few days, but he acknowledged that this arrangement had not been properly maintained, which contributed to the animals' deteriorating health.
The court heard that the neglect was preventable and that the sheep had suffered unnecessarily due to inadequate care. The case highlights the importance of proper animal husbandry and the responsibilities of farmers to ensure the well-being of their livestock.
As a result of the court's findings, Ian Johnstone was fined over £1,150, serving as a reminder of the legal consequences of animal cruelty. The case underscores the need for vigilance and proper oversight in rural farming communities to prevent such cases from occurring in the future.
