“SELF-CONFESSED” CHILD ABUSER IS JAILED FOR MORE THAN FIVE YEARS
A man from Calderdale who admitted his heinous abuse of a young girl and subsequently surrendered himself to authorities has been sentenced to over five years in prison.Ian Hartley, aged 44, entered Halifax police station in June 2018 and confessed to officers that he had assaulted the girl, who is protected from identification by law.
Despite his victim being interviewed in August 2018, the court was told that the case against Hartley was not initiated until July of this year, through a postal requisition.
His legal representative, Stephen Wood, described the nine-month delay before proceedings as “astonishing,” questioning what further evidence the prosecution required after Hartley’s second admission during an interview in October last year.
Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC, the Recorder of Bradford, condemned the delay, calling it “deplorable,” and noted it likely worsened the victim’s psychological trauma.
“The delay has caused significant harm to the victim's mental health,” the judge stated.
“It’s truly unfortunate that, despite overwhelming evidence and cooperation, the case couldn’t have been brought to trial more swiftly.” Mr.
Wood mentioned that Hartley, from Little Bradley, West Vale, Halifax, turned himself in voluntarily, aiming to take responsibility, but acknowledged that the lengthy wait probably intensified the victim’s suffering.
At Bradford Crown Court, it was revealed that Hartley had pleaded guilty to multiple sexual abuse charges involving the complainant.
Prosecutor Camille Morland highlighted that some acts included Hartley mimicking sexual intercourse with the girl.
Judge Durham Hall sentenced Hartley to five years and four months, emphasizing that it was rare for someone to come forward voluntarily, as Hartley did in an attempt to confess his guilt.
The judge remarked, “Sadly, such crimes are often committed by individuals who appear respectable and hide a dark secret,” adding that Hartley suffered a “moral collapse” for reasons only he knows.
He also stated that Hartley would be mandated to register as a sex offender indefinitely and adhere to a sexual harm prevention order for ten years.
