2015: SEX ATTACKER WHO TARGETED 21ST BIRTHDAY WOMAN IN BOLTON NIGHTCLUB J2 IS JAILED
A man who sexually assaulted a woman on the dance floor of a nightclub in Bolton while she was celebrating her 21st birthday has been sentenced to two years in prison, a court heard.Gururaja Kakargal was convicted after the incident at J2 nightclub in the town centre, where he approached and greeted the woman with a birthday wish before the assault occurred.
After the attack, the shocked woman reported the incident to security staff, and Kakargal was detained until police arrived and made the arrest.
The court was informed that Kakargal, who denied the charge of assault by penetration, lifted the woman and committed the sexual assault.
In his sentencing, Judge Peter Davies stated that Kakargal had exploited her celebratory mood and intoxication, knowing that his connections with the club staff might prevent her from being believed if she reported the assault.
“He was confident he would not be caught,” the judge said.
The jury heard that the victim was at the club in Nelson Square celebrating her birthday with friends when, at around 2.45am, Kakargal targeted her on the dance floor.
He then carried out the assault in a public place, causing her distress and pain, the court was told.
Kakargal, aged 30 and residing on Higher Bridge Street in Bolton, has a degree in business administration and has worked in management roles.
His lawyer, Brian McKenna, argued that Kakargal maintains his innocence, has no previous convictions, and that this incident is out of character for him.
He also highlighted that Kakargal denies the offence.
The court imposed a 10-year sex offenders' register requirement and prohibited him from working with children or vulnerable adults.
Following sentencing, PC Chris Woodburn commented: “This was a traumatic ordeal for the victim, who was simply out celebrating with friends.
Kakargal deliberately targeted her, knowing what he was doing.
I commend the victim for her quick thinking in alerting security and police.
We hope this sentence offers some closure for her.”
