BOLTON MOTHER AND DAUGHTER SENTENCED OVER NEGLECT THAT LED TO PONY'S DEATH
Mother and daughter Shantel Tansley and Chloe Hudson were prosecuted by the RSPCA in relation to a bay pony named Jewell, who had to be put down due to their inexcusable neglect.Jewell was in such a poor condition that a vet had to put her to sleep at the scene.
Chloe Hudson, who also goes by Chloe Tansley, cited “mental health issues” as the cause of her callous abandonment of her animals.
The vet attended the scene and determined that the only humane option was to euthanize Jewell, who was found laying on her side in a freezing field with protruding pelvic bone and visible femur through her wasted thigh muscle.
Jewell was suffering from diarrhea, and her condition had deteriorated to a point where rescue was no longer possible.
Both defendants have rehomed all the other equines they owned.
In mitigation, the court heard Hudson was pregnant at the time and reportedly “suffered from mental health issues,” while Tansley had received treatment for cancer.
Sentencing included Hudson: 20-week prison sentence, suspended for 24 months, and Tansley: 16-week prison sentence, suspended for 24 months.
Both are banned from keeping ponies for five years (expires April 2031).
