GORDON NEILL'S SHOCKING CRIME IN TAMWORTH: PENSIONER JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Tamworth, a 78-year-old man named Gordon Neill has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison following his conviction for sexually assaulting a young girl and possessing indecent photographs of minors.The incident took place in April of this year within the grounds of a sheltered scheme in Tamworth, where Neill was found to have indecently assaulted a seven-year-old girl while she was sitting on his lap in the garden.
According to the prosecution, Miss Amy Jacobs, the young girl’s sister witnessed the assault, which prompted immediate action from the authorities.
The girl’s mother was informed of the incident as soon as she arrived at the scene.
The police responded swiftly; Neill was arrested on the same day, and a search of his residence was conducted.
During the search, officers also examined his camper van, which was found to contain a camera with five photographs.
These images depicted another young girl, although the prosecution was unable to definitively identify her.
The photographs were taken during the previous summer, and their presence added a disturbing dimension to the case.
Neill, who was formerly residing at Glenfield, Lower Park, Kettlebrook, is now without a fixed address.
He admitted to the charges of sexually assaulting the seven-year-old girl and taking indecent photographs of a child.
The court heard that Neill had a prior conviction for a sexual offence dating back to 1971, when he and a female accomplice took two teenage girls—who were not minors—away in a car and committed indecent assaults.
During the sentencing, Recorder Miss Tracey Lloyd-Nesling emphasized the seriousness of Neill’s actions, stating, “You absolutely don’t understand the gravity of what you were doing.
You do now accept you have a sexual interest in children.” The judge took into account Neill’s age, noting that he was 78 years old at the time of sentencing.
Despite the relatively brief nature of the assault—without penetration—and the photographs being classified as the least serious category, the court recognized the severity of the offences.
Neill’s defense attorney, Mr.
Andrew Jackson, argued that the assault on the young girl was brief and did not involve penetration.
He also pointed out that the photographs of the other girl were considered to be in the least serious category of indecent images.
The court was also informed that Neill had been evicted from his accommodation and was currently homeless and without friends at his advanced age, which added to the gravity of his situation.
This case has left the community of Tamworth deeply unsettled, highlighting the ongoing concerns about safeguarding vulnerable children and the importance of vigilant law enforcement in addressing such heinous crimes.
