GORDON FEARNLEY SENTENCED TO 11 YEARS IN BOLTON FOR CHILD ABUSE AND RAPE CASE
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the Bolton community, Gordon Fearnley, a 56-year-old man from Burnham Avenue, Doffcocker, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 11 years and four months at Bolton Crown Court. The conviction stems from a disturbing pattern of abuse that spanned over a decade, beginning when his young victim was only seven years old.Prosecutor Joanna Rodikis detailed the harrowing timeline of events, revealing that Fearnley’s predatory actions took place between 1977 and 1987. Over this period, he systematically targeted the girl, initially gaining her trust through gestures of kindness such as offering treats and compliments. However, as the years progressed, his behavior escalated into more heinous acts, including multiple instances of rape.
The court heard that when the victim reached the age of 13, Fearnley’s abuse intensified, culminating in him raping her repeatedly until she was 16. The trauma inflicted upon her has had a lasting impact, with the victim describing herself as “needy, insecure and desperate.” She also attempted to take her own life on one occasion, illustrating the profound psychological scars left by Fearnley’s actions.
Fearnley, who pleaded guilty to three counts of indecent assault, four counts of rape, and possession of 21 indecent images, showed no denial of his crimes. His defense attorney, David Morton, acknowledged the severity of the offences, stating that Fearnley “admitted the offences and cannot believe his own behaviour.” Mr. Morton emphasized that these acts are “shocking” and difficult to comprehend or explain.
Judge Timothy Clayson, presiding over the case, sentenced Fearnley to 11 years and four months in prison. The judge also ordered him to be placed on the sex offenders register for life, highlighting the lasting psychological damage caused to the victim. In his remarks, Judge Clayson underscored the deep and enduring psychological harm inflicted upon the victim, emphasizing the gravity of Fearnley’s misconduct and the importance of safeguarding the community from such offenders.
