DEAF MAN AVOIDS JAIL AFTER BRUTAL DOMESTIC ABUSE CASE IN PAISLEY
A violent offender named Gerald Doonan, aged 58, who previously committed domestic abuse, has been spared imprisonment after attacking his wife Mary over a period of years.
According to court reports, Doonan inflicted physical assaults on Mary on two separate occasions, including hitting her on the head and grabbing her by the hair and throat.
The court heard that the attacks occurred between December 2008 and March 2009 at a house on Neilston Road in Paisley, with additional incidents in April 2012 on Staffa Drive, where he again grabbed her by the hair and throat.
Furthermore, Doonan was found guilty of terrorizing his wife between October 2010 and 2014 by calling her vile names and invading her personal space.
Despite the severity of his conduct, Sheriff Linda Smith chose not to jail him due to his deafness, stating, "But for your disability, you would have been sent to custody for this." The court imposed a curfew from 8pm to 6am for two months and required him to complete 200 hours of unpaid community service.
Doonan, residing on Stock Street in Paisley, was also placed under a curfew and tagged, with the judge emphasizing that these are alternatives to jail.
The article highlights the court's regard for his disability while expressing that his behavior was considered "horrible" and unacceptable.
