Sittingbourne Man Jailed for Raping Woman in Churchyard

SITTINGBOURNE MAN JAILED FOR RAPING WOMAN IN CHURCHYARD

George Orwa, a 33-year-old supermarket worker residing at Agate Court, Sonora Fields, Sittingbourne, was convicted and sentenced for a brutal sexual assault.

He was found guilty of raping a woman in St Michael’s churchyard after following her from a bar where they had initially met.

The incident took place during the night, after he dragged the terrified victim into the secluded graveyard and forcibly raped her despite her protests.

The victim, a mother in her 40s, managed to escape by calling the police after the assault.

The court sentenced Orwa to 12 years in prison, with an extended sentence that prevents release until after serving at least eight years, reflecting his dangerousness.

He will also be on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely and may be deported to Kenya if released on parole, which would require him to remain on license for three additional years.

During his trial, Orwa maintained his innocence and claimed the victim consented, but the jury unanimously convicted him based on the evidence.

Judge Adele Williams highlighted the traumatic impact of the attack, emphasizing the victim's suffering and the risk Orwa posed to others.

After sentencing, authorities expressed their commitment to protecting women from such violence and noted Orwa's lack of insight into his offending behavior.
