HALIFAX MAN JAILED FOR HORRIFIC ASSAULT ON BEDRIDDEN FATHER
Gavin Sharpe, aged 46, has been jailed following an incident in which he assaulted his bedridden father.Sharpe, who had moved into his father’s home to provide support and was receiving carer’s allowance, attacked the 66-year-old during a moment of anger.
Court proceedings at Bradford Crown Court revealed that Sharpe controlled his father’s finances and was involved in daily cannabis purchases.
On New Year’s Day 2023, Sharpe was eating when his father made a request, leading Sharpe to respond by throwing some food into his father’s face.
He then became enraged, hitting his father across the face with a metal spoon, which resulted in reddening and bruising.
The elderly man pleaded with him to stop, and carers reported multiple hits to his head.
Initially, Sharpe insisted the injuries were accidental but later admitted guilt to actual bodily harm last month.
The father, who expressed feeling heartbroken about the incident, also stated he now feels safer living alone.
In a victim impact statement, he described being shocked and frightened by his son’s behavior.
Sentencing him to 18 months in prison, the court also imposed a restraining order banning contact with his father for five years.
Defense solicitor Saf Salam noted that the emotional toll of caring led Sharpe to depression and guilt.
Since the attack, Sharpe has left his father’s home and now resides in his own place with two cats.
Recorder Taryn Turner condemned the cruelty of hitting a vulnerable individual with a metal spoon, calling the act degrading and shameful.
The judge stressed that while caring can be difficult, such conduct is unacceptable, and remarked that the victim now feels safer without his son in his life.
