BURNLEY MAN RECEIVES INDEFINITE HOSPITAL ORDER AFTER KILLING PARTNER
Gary Fletcher, a 35-year-old resident of Wilton Street in Burnley, was involved in a tragic incident where he admitted to the manslaughter of his partner, Nicola Haworth, who was 33 years old, on 22 July 2016.The police arrested Fletcher following an incident involving a large knife, during which he confessed to killing Nicola Haworth.
Her body was found hidden inside a cupboard at their home, covered with a quilt, with her hands and feet bound, and a bin liner covering her head.
A post-mortem examination confirmed that the cause of death was asphyxiation.
Although Fletcher was initially suspected of murder, medical evaluations demonstrated that he was experiencing mental health issues at the time of the offence, leading doctors to agree that his responsibility was diminished.
On 17 October 2017, Fletcher received an indefinite hospital order after entering a plea and attending court, acknowledging the severity of his conduct and mental condition.
The conviction illustrates the complicated relationship between mental health struggles and violent acts.
Police officers and family members expressed their sorrow and disapproval of Fletcher's actions.
Detective Chief Inspector Joanne McHugh described Fletcher’s behavior as "cold, callous and cruel." Nicola Haworth’s brother, Robert Haworth, paid tribute by saying, "Nicola Joanne was a very good person.
Not just a sister but also a mother and aunt.
He has taken away my best friend, sister and role model to many who loved her dearly."
