GARY BAXTER AND HIS BRUTAL RAPE IN HEREFORDSHIRE
A courageous woman has publicly shared her story and emotional journey after her attacker, Gary Baxter of Husseys Lane, Kington, was sentenced to prison, in an effort to encourage other victims across Worcestershire and Herefordshire to come forward.Baxter, aged 46, faced justice after being convicted of a single count of rape at Worcester Crown Court.
He received a prison sentence of three years and ten months, and as part of his punishment, was ordered to sign the sex offender register until further notice.
The victim, who has requested lifelong anonymity, delivered her testimony during Baxter's trial.
She described the harrowing experience that culminated in her assault in October 2020.
Her account paints a picture of a man described as 'controlling and manipulative,' who used various tactics to overpower her.
She recounted how Baxter took her car keys, effectively trapping her and preventing any chance of escape, before ultimately raping her.
Despite her physical strength, she admitted that she was no match for him during the assault, emphasizing her shock and disbelief at what was happening.
In her heartfelt interview, she expressed the doubts and fears that plagued her in the aftermath.
She questioned whether her account would be believed, especially since there were no visible physical injuries to corroborate her claim.
She reflected on her confusion and the numerous questions racing through her mind, such as why she didn't fight harder or what evidence could support her account.
Despite these doubts, she recognized that a crime had been committed against her and resolved to seek justice.
Recognizing the importance of timely medical care, she visited a Sexual Assault Referral Clinic (SARC) within two days of the incident to undergo a thorough examination and collect evidence, while still contemplating whether to report her assault to the police.
She highlighted how the nursing staff provided compassionate support, explaining her options and ensuring she made an informed decision.
During this process, she understood the full gravity of her experience and decided she could not let her attacker evade justice.
Her decision to report to law enforcement was made after careful consideration.
She described the police interview as professional and sensitive, during which she provided her evidence.
She was subsequently referred to several support agencies to assist her emotionally and help her navigate the complexities of the criminal justice system.
She singled out the Rape Crisis Centre and The Sexual Violence Service as vital sources of ongoing support, with an advocate assigned to her throughout the process.
The woman also addressed other survivors who may be hesitating to report their own assaults, encouraging them to seek help.
Her message was one of empowerment, emphasizing that speaking out against abuse is a crucial step in reclaiming control over one's life.
She reassured others that they are not to blame for what happened and that their attackers made the conscious choice to commit the assault.
Her words serve as a reminder that victims are not weak or deserving of blame—rather, they are survivors who can find happiness again.
The court's ruling also included measures to further protect the community and the victim, with orders for Baxter to be added to the disclosure and barring service's register and potential restraining orders.
Additionally, a victim surcharge of £190 was imposed upon him, underscoring the serious nature of his crimes.
