WOMAN LEFT WITH PANIC ATTACKS AFTER BEING REPEATEDLY RAPED
A 38-year-old man from Cwmbran has received a prison sentence after being convicted of multiple counts of rape.Gareth Colsey was found guilty by a jury following a trial that involved three separate charges of sexual assault against a woman.
During proceedings at Cardiff Crown Court, prosecutor Nik Strobl presented a victim impact statement.
He detailed that the woman affected by Colsey's actions now endures anxiety, panic attacks, and emotional distress as a result of the assault.
Keith Edwards, acting as the defendant’s solicitor, noted that Colsey faces ongoing emotional challenges.
The court was informed that he has prior convictions including incidents of shoplifting and criminal damage.
The presiding judge, Richard Kember, emphasized that the victim’s confidence had been fundamentally destroyed.
The judge acknowledged Colsey’s troubled background, stating he experienced a challenging and impoverished childhood and was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder at age 14, linked to early trauma.
Addressing the court, Judge Kember stated that the jury was convinced the victim was truthful and dismissed Colsey’s testimony on all charges.
Colsey, residing at Clos Meithrin, Two Locks, Cwmbran, was sentenced to a total of 11 years imprisonment.
