GARETH BRAITHWAITE FROM CHATHAM JAILED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING 14-YEAR-OLD BOY IN BRAINTREE
In October 2013, Gareth Braithwaite, a 42-year-old former taxi company owner from Chatham, was sentenced to a total of 16 months in prison after pleading guilty to multiple serious charges involving a 14-year-old boy from Braintree. The case highlighted the dangers of online grooming and the tragic consequences of inappropriate relationships between adults and minors.
According to court records, Braithwaite engaged in a series of conversations with the young teenager via social media platforms earlier that year.
These exchanges included sexually explicit messages that were deemed entirely inappropriate given the age of the recipient.
The teenager, who was only 14, repeatedly referred to Braithwaite using terms like “hun” and “my baby,” indicating a developing emotional attachment that was exploited by the adult.
Subsequently, Braithwaite arranged to meet the boy in person.
The planned meeting took place at a pub in Witham, before they intended to go to the Freeport shopping outlet in Braintree.
The situation raised alarm among teachers and friends of the teenager, who became aware that the boy had been meeting with adult males, prompting concerns about his safety and well-being.
On the day of the incident, police apprehended Braithwaite at a shopping village near McDonald's.
The young victim was found in Braithwaite’s Range Rover, and authorities also discovered a room key for a hotel in Southend, suggesting plans for further contact or activity.
During the investigation, police found evidence of financial transactions from a bank account set up by Braithwaite, which he used to send money to the boy.
The funds were reportedly used to purchase items such as CDs, a bicycle, and even a tattoo.
In court, Judge David Turner QC described the case as a grave error in judgment.
He acknowledged that Braithwaite initially believed he was engaging with an adult for a consensual relationship but quickly realized the true age of the boy.
The judge emphasized that the teenager was a troubled individual who had already experienced significant trauma and had been damaged by the encounter.
Despite this, the court noted that the boy appeared to be a willing participant in the sexual activity, which further complicated the case.
Judge Turner also pointed out that Braithwaite’s actions demonstrated a clear failure to recognize the harm he was causing.
He stated, “This was a grave error in judgment.
When it became apparent that the boy was much younger, Braithwaite should have ceased all contact immediately.
Instead, he continued to pursue the relationship, which is deeply concerning.” During the proceedings, it was also revealed that Braithwaite’s actions included grooming the boy, and he was found guilty of child abduction, sexual activity with a child, and grooming a minor under 16.
The court noted that there was no conclusive evidence of penetrative sex, but the other charges were sufficient for a significant custodial sentence.
Additionally, Braithwaite was found to have possessed and downloaded indecent images of children, although this charge was left on file and not part of the immediate sentencing.
Supporters of Braithwaite, including his brother Duncan, who previously worked as a driver for his company, expressed a different perspective.
Duncan stated, “He’s just a regular, normal guy, who’s gay and got caught up in a situation that got out of control on him.
He’s not been searching for young boys online, he’s not a paedophile, he accepts what he did and knows he’s done wrong and pleaded guilty and co-operated from the outset.” Ultimately, Braithwaite received a sentence comprising 16 months for child abduction, six months for engaging in sexual activity with a minor, and nine months for grooming a child under 16.
These sentences are to be served concurrently.
The court also left open the possibility of further action regarding the possession of indecent images, which was not part of the immediate sentence.
