MAN FACES JAIL AFTER RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT IN YORK
A man is facing a jail sentence after admitting to raping a woman in York.Eid Anwar Fathi Najjar was told by the Recorder of York, Judge Sean Morris, that a jail sentence is “inevitable” when he appeared at York Crown Court on Thursday (October 30).
Najjar, 20, previously of Burton Stone Lane, York, pleaded guilty to one count of rape and one count of sexual assault.
Both charges relate to the same victim and happened in July, the court heard.
The CPS said: “In line with our duty to review live cases, it was determined that our evidential test for prosecution against a second defendant was no longer met.
This decision has been fully communicated to the complainant in this case and we will continue to be available to assist her in any way we can.” They added: “The strength of our case against Eid Anwar Fathi Najjar means he has indicated guilty pleas to rape and sexual assault – sending a strong message that the CPS will not hesitate to bring those who commit these vile offences to justice where possible.” Judge Morris ordered a pre-sentence report to be prepared before Najjar could be sentenced.
But he told Najjar: “A custodial sentence in this instance is inevitable.
It’s just a question of how long.” Najjar appeared in court via video link from prison.
He sat during the short court hearing and followed the proceedings through an Arabic interpreter.
Najjar was remanded in custody and will be sentenced at York Crown Court on Thursday, December 4.
