MAN WHO MURDERED MOTHER OF A CHILD SENTENCED TO EIGHT YEARS
Eddie Tweed, a 32-year-old man, was involved in a brutal knife attack that resulted in the death of Heather Grant. The incident occurred after Tweed, who was suffering from mental illness at the time, stabbed Heather to death in her house on Viewfield Road, Coatbridge.
The attack happened minutes after Tweed set up a makeshift noose for himself.
Tweed had a history of mental health issues, and doctors later confirmed he was suffering from mental illness during the attack, but claimed he was cured by the time of sentencing.
Tweed had been originally charged with murder but pleaded guilty to culpable homicide.
He was sentenced to eight years in prison.
The court noted that Tweed was mentally ill at the time of the killing, but Heather’s family and friends expressed their outrage, feeling that the sentence was too lenient for such an act.
Tweed had a close relationship with Heather, who met him after her first husband, Joe Grant, committed suicide; Tweed was actually Joe’s cousin.
On the night of the murder, Tweed had gone out drinking with his brother and came home planning to commit suicide, leaving notes and a noose at his home.
The tragedy also involved Heather’s four-year-old son Steven, who witnessed the incident and still cannot understand why his mother is not around.
The family has sought psychological help for Steven, and he is now being cared for by Heather’s first wife, Mary.
Heather was described as being a caring person, and her family had no suspicion of Tweed’s capacity for violence before the incident.
