WOMAN THREATENS EX-LOVER WITH A KNIFE AFTER HOTEL STALKING SCAM
Dawn Brookfield, a 53-year-old woman, became 'obsessed' with a married man after he ended their affair and returned to his wife. She sneaked into his hotel room in York in January 2016, where he was working, with presents and champagne, and lay in wait on his bed wearing lingerie.
The court was told that the hotel room was 'strewn with Christmas presents and bottles of champagne'.
When the man tried to leave, Brookfield produced a knife and threatened him.
The police were alerted by the man's wife after he managed to call her before Brookfield snatched his phone.
The man decided not to pursue a complaint and was not charged; however, a week later, Brookfield sent a parcel to his wife containing women's underwear, vitamin pills, abusive notes, and a DVD of a film involving a man having an affair being killed by his mistress.
Brookfield was arrested the following day after calling the police and making false allegations.
She also sent several 'unpleasant' emails warning the couple that police would stage a 'dawn raid' on their home.
She admitted to stalking and causing alarm or distress and received an eight-month suspended sentence after the court considered her mental health condition, which was diagnosed as bipolar disorder.
The judge, Recorder Nicholas Syfret QC, noted her lack of prior criminal record and her mental illness, and expressed that her actions caused significant mental distress to the wife.
The court also imposed a restraining order banning her from contacting the couple.
