AMMANFORD SEX OFFENDER DAVID TORRINGTON SENTENCED TO 14 YEARS FOR RAPE OF 7-YEAR-OLD GIRL
In a case that has shocked the community of Ammanford, David Torrington, a 48-year-old man residing on Station Road, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 14 years after being convicted of heinous sexual offenses involving a young girl.The conviction was handed down at Swansea Crown Court, where Torrington faced justice for his actions.
His crimes date back to incidents that occurred before 2003, with the court hearing that these were historic offenses.
Torrington was found guilty on October 14, 2011, of seven counts of rape, involving a girl who was only seven years old at the time.
The sentencing process was delayed due to ongoing court proceedings related to other matters, but the severity of his crimes was clear.
Judge Peter Heywood addressed Torrington directly during the sentencing, emphasizing the gravity of the offenses.
He stated, "She was a mere child.
This was clearly a terrifying experience for her, and I remember her clearly saying how she cried afterwards." The judge also noted that the young girl did not report the abuse immediately, which is a common occurrence in cases involving children, often leading to delays in justice.
Judge Heywood highlighted that these were serious offenses, and as such, Torrington's only appropriate punishment was custodial imprisonment.
Despite acknowledging that Torrington was a hard-working man, employed as a builder and working in Llandovery, the court could not overlook the nature of his crimes.
Furthermore, the judge ordered that Torrington must sign the sex offenders register upon his release from prison.
He was also subjected to an indefinite ban from working with children and vulnerable adults, reflecting the court's concern for public safety and the protection of potential victims.
As of December 2018, Torrington has been released from prison and is currently residing in a halfway house, continuing his sentence outside of incarceration.
His case remains a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding children and the ongoing efforts of the justice system to hold offenders accountable.
