DAVID SPIRIDON FROM CHATHAM SENTENCED FOR RAPE AND GANG-RELATED CRIMES AT PENTAGON SHOPPING CENTRE

In November 2018, a young teenager named David Spiridon from Chatham was sentenced to nine years in prison after being convicted of raping a girl in the parking lot of the Pentagon Shopping Centre. The incident, which took place in March of that year, involved Spiridon, who was only 17 at the time, targeting a 15-year-old girl in a multi-storey car park located within the shopping complex.

The victim, who knew Spiridon as a member of a feared Medway gang, recounted that she was approached by him while she was at the shopping centre with friends. She described Spiridon as wearing a bandana on his head, and he then instructed her to accompany him away from her friends. He led her to a stairwell in the parking garage, where he proceeded to ask her personal questions about her sexual activity, including whether she had 'given uck,' a slang term for performing a sex act. The girl was then forced to perform the act against her will.

According to court reports, the girl did not attempt to resist or escape during the assault because she had seen Spiridon with a knife concealed under his jacket. The following day, she encountered Spiridon again at the shopping centre, where he showed her videos on his phone of other girls performing sexual acts on him. Despite her attempts to signal to her friends to avoid him, they did not follow her.

Prosecutor Christopher May explained that the girl was deeply traumatized by the events. She later revealed in a victim statement that she no longer felt safe going out, had frequent flashbacks, and was suffering from sleep and eating disturbances. She described her feelings about the assault as one of disgust and humiliation, emphasizing the profound impact it had on her life.

Spiridon, who claimed that the girl had consented, was arrested on March 24 at the car wash where he was employed. During the trial, it was revealed that Spiridon was part of a gang known as C4, which was also involved in the Kyle Yule murder trial. The court heard that Spiridon was streetwise and mature for his age, and that he believed he could get away with his actions, showing no remorse or insight into the gravity of his crimes.

Judge Adele Williams, presiding over the case at Maidstone Crown Court, addressed Spiridon directly, condemning his actions. She stated that he had treated the girl as an object for his sexual gratification, not as a human being. The judge highlighted that Spiridon had used intimidation tactics, including displaying a knife and wearing a balaclava, to instill fear in the victim. She emphasized that Spiridon’s knowledge of her drug use and gang affiliation only added to her terror during the incidents.

In her sentencing remarks, Judge Williams noted that if Spiridon had been an adult, he would have received a sentence of 13 years. She pointed out that Spiridon, who had previous convictions for robbery in 2016, was only 16 at the time of the offences. The court also ordered that Spiridon’s name be entered on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely, and a sexual harm prevention order was imposed for ten years.
