GWYNEDD MAN JAILED FOR BRUTAL MURDER AFTER BARMOUTH HOUSE MIX-UP
David Redfern, aged 46, was convicted of the murder of 71-year-old Margaret Barnes in Barmouth, Gwynedd.During the trial, it was revealed that Redfern discovered Mrs Barnes in his home, which was left unlocked.
She had entered by mistake, thinking it was a bed and breakfast.
Prosecutor Michael Jones described her presence as a "mistake that ultimately cost her her life." Following her fall asleep in his bed, Redfern dragged Mrs Barnes downstairs and then assaulted her by kicking and stamping, resulting in her death.
Mrs Barnes had been out drinking and intended to stay at a nearby B&B on Marine Parade where Redfern resided.
Evidence showed that Redfern found her sleeping in his house, which was accessible due to the unlocked door, leading her to enter improperly.
Judge Bourne remarked that Redfern’s actions were "beyond the understanding of any reasonable person," pointing out his aggressive and offensive conduct.
He received a life sentence with a minimum term of 14 years.
The judge recognized that Redfern did not intend to kill but emphasized that the bizarre circumstances do not justify his behavior, setting this case apart from many others.
After the sentencing, North Wales Police officer Detective Superintendent Mark Pierce described Redfern as a "cowardly, vicious bully" who displayed no remorse.
The police and court highlighted the brutality of the assault and the profound emotional impact on Margaret Barnes's family, including her daughter Natalie and granddaughter Robyn, who shared their heartbreak and ongoing grief.
