KILMARNOCK MAN SENTENCED FOR FRENZIED KNIFE ATTACK ON EX-PARTNER
David Payne, aged 51 and from Kilmarnock, received a life sentence in prison following his conviction for the murder of his former partner, Alexis Flynn.Court proceedings detailed that Payne conducted a violent and frenzied knife assault using a large blade, resulting in 11 separate stab wounds across various parts of her body, ultimately causing her death.
In a 999 emergency call, Payne asserted that Miss Flynn had attacked him first with a knife and claimed he only stabbed her two or three times.
When law enforcement officials arrived on the scene, they found Payne calmly smoking a cigarette and drinking a can of beer, showing little sign of distress.
He was later sentenced to serve at least 14 and a half years before being eligible for parole.
Judge Lord Burns addressed Payne directly, stating, 'You have taken responsibility not only for your partner Alexis Flynn’s death but also for the act of murder itself.' It was also disclosed that Payne was subject to a court order at the time, which prohibited him from approaching Miss Flynn following a previous alleged assault.
The post-mortem examination determined that Flynn’s death was caused by a stab wound to the leg that severed major blood vessels, leading to rapid and massive blood loss.
Although injuries to her lungs, stomach, and kidney might have been survivable under other circumstances, the wound inflicted on her thigh was described as catastrophic.
The defense suggested that the motive stemmed from Payne’s perception of a relationship between Miss Flynn and another unknown individual, which triggered a dispute.
Payne’s criminal history includes prior convictions for domestic assault and breach of peace.
Investigators emphasized the terrifying nature of the attack, describing it as a sustained assault with a large knife, and noted Payne’s unsettling composure afterward as 'somewhat chilling.'
