LEEK PENSIONER DAVID MATHIAS SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULTS ON GIRLS IN STOKE-ON-TRENT
In a case that has shocked the community of Leek and the surrounding Stoke-on-Trent area, pensioner David Mathias was sentenced to prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting two young girls. The incidents, which took place over a period of time, have left lasting emotional scars on the victims, as detailed during the proceedings at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court.Prosecutor Fiona Cortese outlined the disturbing details of the case, revealing that on one occasion, Mathias committed a sexual assault on one of the girls. During this incident, he reportedly pulled down his underwear and told her, 'it was her turn,' an act that the victim refused. The court was informed that Mathias was arrested in November 2011, after the allegations came to light, and he subsequently admitted to touching the girls beneath their clothing.
The court heard that both victims are now suffering from significant emotional distress. One girl, in particular, is plagued by anxiety and frequently relives the traumatic events. She often breaks down and begins crying when she is alone, highlighting the profound impact of Mathias's actions on her mental health.
David Mathias, aged 68, residing on Union Street in Leek, has no prior criminal record. He pleaded guilty to six counts of sexual assault of a child under 13 and one count of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity. His defense, represented by Paul Cliff, emphasized Mathias's honesty with police and noted that the offenses did not involve intimidation, coercion, or force. Cliff also mentioned that Mathias has been burdened with guilt for several years.
Despite these mitigating factors, Judge Paul Glenn sentenced Mathias to 32 months in prison. The judge described the offenses as a 'prolonged and premeditated course of action,' underscoring the severity of the crimes. Additionally, Mathias will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, a measure that reflects the gravity of his offenses and the court's concern for public safety.
