DAVID GARWOOD FROM TAMWORTH SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN BIRMINGHAM
In a case that has shocked the community of Tamworth and the wider Staffordshire area, David Garwood, a 65-year-old former magistrate, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison at Birmingham Crown Court for serious allegations of child sexual abuse.Garwood, who resided on Highcliffe Road in Tamworth, was found guilty of four counts of indecent assault involving two young children.
The court also ordered that he be placed on the sex offenders register for a period of ten years, reflecting the gravity of his crimes.
During the sentencing, Mr.
Justice Crane emphasized the severity of the offences, stating, 'I accept that this court deals with cases of abuse of children which in physical terms are more serious than this.
But any offence against a child of this kind is obviously serious as you well know.
It is likely to be damaging to the child.' The judge's remarks underscored the damaging impact such crimes have on victims and the importance of holding offenders accountable.
The prosecution, led by John Price, revealed that the offences took place in May of the previous year.
The crimes came to light after one of the children confided in an adult, prompting an investigation.
Evidence presented in court showed that Garwood had also shown a pornographic magazine to one of the victims.
Authorities found several similar magazines at his residence, further implicating him in the misconduct.
Garwood's defense, represented by David Crigman QC, acknowledged the damage caused by the allegations, stating, 'The allegations have been broadcast within the community and he has lived within an atmosphere of absolute misery and disgrace.
As a lay magistrate, he has brought disgrace to the honour of that position and to his own name.' Following his arrest, Garwood was suspended from his duties as a magistrate.
Due to his guilty pleas, he was dismissed from his position and will never serve as a magistrate again, marking a significant fall from grace for the once-respected community figure.
