DAVID COWLING, FORMER PERTH HEAD TEACHER, CONVICTED OF SEX OFFENCES AT BALNACRAIG SCHOOL

David Cowling, a 76-year-old former head teacher, has been found guilty of multiple sexual offences committed at Balnacraig School in Perth over four decades ago. The court proceedings revealed disturbing details about Cowling's inappropriate conduct towards a young girl during his tenure at the school.

It was established that Cowling engaged in a pattern of grooming and sexual misconduct with the victim, who was a minor at the time. Although Cowling admitted to the court that no sexual activity took place before her 16th birthday, evidence presented during the trial painted a different picture. It was shown that he had involved himself sexually with her before she turned 13, and that he took her to a hotel on her 16th birthday, which was a clear indication of his predatory behavior.

The victim, now in her 50s, provided a detailed account of her ordeal, describing how Cowling abused her at various locations. She recounted incidents that occurred at a caravan parked on the school grounds, as well as during trips to Glasgow and Arisaig in the early 1970s. These revelations highlighted the extent and duration of Cowling's misconduct, which spanned several years.

The allegations came to light after a second woman came forward, reporting similar assaults committed by Cowling in the past. This prompted a thorough investigation by authorities, ultimately leading to his conviction. During the court hearing, a sheriff emphasized the gravity of Cowling's position, stating, "At the time you were the headmaster of the establishment. The children under your control were put there because they were in the care system. They were vulnerable individuals. You were in a position of trust and undoubtedly you abused that trust."

Following the trial, Cowling was convicted on two counts of sexual offences. He was subsequently sentenced to two years in prison. His legal representative acknowledged that Cowling had paid a significant price for what was described as a mistake and a lapse in judgment, though the court's verdict underscored the seriousness of his actions and the betrayal of trust involved.
