PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHER AND TENNIS COACH CONVICTED OF PUBLIC INDECENCY
A primary school teacher and children's tennis coach has been convicted of public indecency following allegations that led to his removal from the classroom.David Buchanan Smith, aged 38 and residing in Aberdeen, admitted guilt to the charge of public indecency.
The incident occurred while he was working as a probationary teacher at Lainshaw Primary School in Stewarton, and he was removed from his role earlier this year.
Smith, who also coached children and conducted school holiday tennis camps, pleaded guilty to the charge, while a not guilty plea to a charge of breach of the peace was accepted, and sentencing was deferred.
Parents of pupils at the school were sent a letter warning them about the charges, which were described as 'serious and upsetting.' The letter, issued by Linda McAulay-Griffiths, Chief Education Officer of East Ayrshire Council, stated that the charges did not involve any children in the school or community.
Smith appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court on July 18 to face the charges.
The investigation and subsequent court proceedings revealed the seriousness of the case, though further details could not be disclosed at this stage due to trial restrictions.
The council emphasized that immediate action was taken when allegations emerged, and cooperation with police continues.
Despite the charges, Smith received positive reviews from parents for his coaching, describing him as 'energised, enthusiastic and skilled.' The article includes images of Smith and the school, as well as a statement from East Ayrshire Council confirming he is no longer employed there.
