Darren Merriman, a 40-year-old resident of Newhey in Rochdale, was found guilty of fatally stabbing his wife, Elizabeth Merriman, 22 times with a samurai sword.
The assault took place during a dispute at their residence on Birch Crescent on October 22.
After the attack, Merriman fled but was later located by police with injuries inflicted on himself in the early hours of the following day.
He confessed to the killing in court and was handed a life sentence, with a minimum term of at least 18 and a half years before eligibility for parole.
Authorities described the murder as particularly savage, with senior investigating officer Duncan Thorpe remarking, 'Elizabeth’s death was devastating for her family, and our sympathies are with them during this extremely challenging time.' It was also reported that Merriman had been drinking with a friend earlier that day, and an argument with Elizabeth upon returning home contributed to the fatal stabbing.
