DARREN GRAY FROM SKELMERSDALE SENTENCED FOR 26 SEX OFFENSES AGAINST YOUNG GIRL
In a case that has shocked the local community of Skelmersdale, Darren Gray, aged 37, has been sentenced to eight years in prison after admitting to a series of serious sexual offenses committed against a young girl. The court heard that Gray's actions had a profound and devastating impact on his victim, who reportedly became so overwhelmed by the trauma that she contemplated taking her own life.Gray, who was found to have no fixed address at the time of his arrest, pleaded guilty to a total of 26 charges, which included two counts of rape. The remaining charges encompassed indecent assault, indecency with a child, sexual assault, and attempted sexual assault. The severity of these charges underscores the gravity of his crimes and the profound harm inflicted upon the young victim.
During the proceedings at Preston Crown Court, prosecutor Richard Haworth detailed the progression of Gray’s offending. He explained that the abuse began with Gray asking the girl to perform a sexual act, specifically requesting her to 'do a show' by removing her clothes in front of him. This initial misconduct escalated over time, culminating in acts of rape and other sexual assaults. Haworth emphasized the emotional toll on the victim, revealing that she felt so despondent and hopeless that she took steps to end her life. Fortunately, she was able to pull out of her suicidal plan at the last moment, avoiding further tragedy.
In police interviews, Gray admitted to being unable to control his impulses, acknowledging that he knew his actions were wrong but felt powerless to stop himself. His defense lawyer, Heather Lloyd, expressed that Gray was deeply ashamed and remorseful for his conduct. She also revealed that Gray had himself been subjected to sexual abuse during his childhood, a factor often considered in understanding such behavior.
Psychiatric and probation officers who prepared reports for the court provided a cautiously optimistic outlook. They believed that Gray might be receptive to therapeutic interventions that could reduce the risk of reoffending once he is released from prison. The court also imposed strict conditions, including a lifelong ban on any unsupervised contact with children under 18, a prohibition from working with children, and a requirement to register as a sex offender for life.
Judge Andrew Blake addressed Gray directly, highlighting that his early guilty plea was a mitigating factor that spared the victim from having to give evidence in court. The judge’s sentence reflects the seriousness of the crimes and the need to protect the community from further harm.
