DARRAN ROCHE FROM EBBW VALE ESCAPES JAIL AFTER DOWNLOADING OVER 100 INDECENT IMAGES OF CHILDREN IN NEWPORT
In a case that has shocked the community of Ebbw Vale, Darran Roche, an 18-year-old resident of Lilian Grove, appeared before Newport Crown Court to face serious charges related to the possession of indecent images of children. The proceedings took place shortly after Roche received his exam results, adding a poignant layer to the case as he was sentenced for his actions.Gwent Police conducted a thorough search of Roche’s residence, seizing multiple electronic devices, including a mobile phone, which were later examined for evidence. The investigation uncovered a disturbing collection of images and videos depicting minors in explicit situations. Prosecutor Nuhu Gobir revealed that authorities recovered approximately 204 images, along with eight videos, during the search. Among these, two images were classified as Category A, indicating the most severe level of indecency, while six videos fell into Category B, and the remaining images were categorized as C.
Specifically, the police found 196 images, with two in the most serious Category A, six in Category B, and a significant number—160—in Category C. The videos included two in Category B, featuring girls aged between 10 and 12, and the images depicted children as young as four to six years old in Category C. These findings painted a disturbing picture of the material Roche had been collecting.
During police interviews, Roche claimed he was unaware of why he had saved the images, stating that he “stumbled across them” when he was between 15 and 16 years old. He also admitted to searching for content on legal websites that eventually led him to illegal sites, where he downloaded the illicit material. Roche expressed that viewing these images and videos made him feel sick, indicating a level of remorse or discomfort with his actions.
The court heard that Roche had been involved in this activity since he was approximately 15 or 16 years old and that he recognized the need for help to address his behavior. Prosecutor Gobir emphasized that Roche had acknowledged his ongoing engagement with such material and expressed a desire for assistance.
Judge Tom Crowther QC addressed the court, noting that there were no Category A films involved in the case. He described Roche as “very young and, to a degree, immature,” highlighting the importance of rehabilitation in such cases. The judge underscored that efforts to reform and support offenders are crucial, especially when the individual is at a formative age.
Ultimately, Roche was sentenced to a two-year community order, which includes 30 days of rehabilitation programs. Additionally, he will be required to register as a sex offender for five years, a measure intended to monitor and prevent further offending. The case serves as a stark reminder of the serious nature of possessing and viewing indecent images of children, and the court’s decision reflects a balance between punishment and the potential for rehabilitation.
