HUSBAND JAILED FOR RELENTLESS STALKING AND DRIVEWAY GRAFFITI

A bitter husband landed himself in court after failing to accept the end of his 12-year marriage.

Daniel Hulme carried out a relentless stalking campaign between July 19 and November 27 last year.

North Staffordshire Justice Centre heard that the 45-year-old’s lengthy relationship crumbled after he became increasingly controlling over his ex-wife.

But Hulme’s possessive behaviour continued past their break-up as he bombarded her with messages and unwanted visits.

He would show up at his victim's house and on one occasion, he chalked ‘daddy loves mummy’ over the driveway.

Prosecutor Emma Thompson said: “The victim has made no less than 12 statements in relation to the breaches in this case.

The defendant only pled guilty to these offences after the witnesses were sworn in at his trial.

While admissions were made, he seemed to be making excuses rather than fully accepting his guilt.” Mrs Thompson also shared a victim impact statement with the court.

It read: “He became more possessive and controlling after I told him I wanted a divorce in July 2024.

After I told him this, I was forced to call the police after he put a knife to his throat and threatened to kill himself.

He sends me countless texts.

He would tell me he loved me, before telling me that I was a c**t.

“I ignored his constant messages.

He then showed up at my house.

It scared me and I called the police.

One occasion, he chalked ‘daddy loves mummy’ all over my driveway.

He implied he had sex with my friends.

He accused me of ruining everything and said all these problems were the fault of me going through menopause.

“The constant messages have left me feeling scared and anxious and affected my mental health.

My mum has suffered panic attacks.

I want to make it clear.

I never wanted it like this.

I just wanted to separate amicably and go peacefully.

He has not contributed anything financially apart from buying the children gifts at birthdays and Christmas.

This has left us under financial strain.

Since not talking to him, I feel much better.” Hulme, of Dale Crescent, Congleton, pleaded guilty to stalking to cause stress and alarm and breaching a non-molestation order on October 2, 2025.

Mark Harrison, mitigating, explained that Hulme had struggled to accept the loss of his domestic security as he suffered with mental health problems and financial difficulties.

He told the court: “It’s clear that Mr Hulme has been going through his own difficulties, which he is working to address.

He is currently unemployed due to his mental health.

He has had financial issues.

He hoped to resolve these relationship matters, but it has become clear that will not happen now.

He has fully complied with his onerous bail conditions since November.” Hulme was handed a 10-week prison sentence - suspended for 18 months - alongside an 18-month community order, requiring him to complete 35 rehabilitation days and pay £454 costs.

He was also slapped with an 18-month restraining order, forbidding him from contacting his ex-wife or going to her address.

The magistrates told him: “Because of the duration of the stalking and its intensity, we believe this offending has passed the custody threshold.

But we have decided to suspend this sentence, as you have shown a level of acceptance and understanding of what you’ve done.

There is lots of support in place for you now.

Use it.

The ball is in your court.”
