DANIEL ASHBROOK SENTENCED FOR COERCIVE CONTROL IN CHELMSFORD
Daniel Ashbrook, aged 41 and residing on Northview Drive in Westcliff, faced serious legal consequences after pleading guilty to charges of controlling and coercive behaviour at Chelmsford Crown Court on the 29th of November, 2024. The court proceedings culminated in a sentencing that took place on the 11th of February, 2025, where Ashbrook was handed a range of penalties designed to address the severity of his actions.Among the sanctions imposed was a 21-month prison sentence, which was suspended for a period of two years, allowing Ashbrook to serve his sentence conditionally under supervision. Additionally, the court issued a comprehensive restraining order that will remain in effect for ten years, prohibiting him from making contact with the victim and ensuring her safety. As part of the court's decision, Ashbrook was also ordered to pay £1,500 in compensation to the victim, acknowledging the emotional and psychological harm inflicted upon her.
Furthermore, Ashbrook was sentenced to complete 180 hours of unpaid community work, emphasizing the rehabilitative aspect of his punishment. He was also mandated to participate in 20 days of rehabilitation activities, aimed at addressing behavioural issues and preventing future misconduct.
Details of the abuse reveal a disturbing pattern of sustained mental, physical, and emotional torment over approximately three years. The victim endured a series of oppressive actions by Ashbrook, including efforts to isolate her from her social support network. He would restrict her contact with friends and family, often showing up uninvited when she attempted to meet with loved ones, thereby exerting control over her personal relationships.
In addition to these manipulative tactics, Ashbrook insulted the victim through various means—verbally in person, over the phone, and via text messages—contributing to a hostile and intimidating environment. His abusive behaviour extended to damaging her vehicle on multiple occasions, a deliberate attempt to prevent her from leaving the house or attending her place of employment, further demonstrating the extent of his coercive control.
This case highlights the serious consequences of controlling behaviour and the importance of legal measures to protect victims from ongoing abuse. The court’s decision reflects a firm stance against such conduct, aiming to deter similar actions within the Chelmsford community and beyond.
