DAN GLANCEY FROM BLYTH SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO PET ROTTWEILER XENA IN NORTHUMBERLAND

Daniel Glancey, a resident of Blyth, was found guilty of causing severe neglect and suffering to his pet Rottweiler, Xena. Born on July 10, 1989, and living at Eighth Avenue, Blyth NE24 2QE, Glancey’s actions have drawn significant attention from animal welfare authorities and the local community.

The case came to light after Xena was found wandering the streets and was subsequently picked up by an animal welfare officer from Northumberland County Council. Concerned about the dog’s dire condition, the officer took her to a veterinarian for a thorough examination. The inspection revealed that Xena was in a critically poor state, with a body condition score of only 2 out of 9. She weighed a mere 19 kilograms, and her ribs, hip bones, spine, and skull were prominently visible through her thin fur. The dog was also suffering from overgrown nails, discharge from her eyes, and general weakness, indicating prolonged neglect.

Further investigation traced Xena back to Glancey after he and his partner, Katie White, posted ‘missing dog’ notices on social media. In one of these posts, Glancey described Xena as being “a little underweight” due to illness, which starkly contrasted with her actual condition. When contacted by the animal welfare officer regarding her state, Glancey initially provided false information, claiming that Xena was under the care of a local veterinary practice and had been poisoned by fertiliser. However, he later admitted that she had not been seen by a vet, citing financial constraints as the reason. Veterinarians confirmed that her appalling condition was solely due to neglect and inadequate nutrition.

Recognizing the severity of the situation, the officer took custody of Xena, who was then placed in the care of Northumberland Dog Rescue. Over the following weeks, Xena received the necessary treatment and nourishment to recover from her ordeal. Her health improved significantly, and she was eventually adopted into a loving new home, where she now enjoys a happy and healthy life.

In court, Glancey faced sentencing for his cruelty. He was initially given a nine-week custodial sentence, which was reduced to six weeks due to his early guilty plea. The sentence was suspended for six months, meaning he would not serve time unless he committed further offences within that period. Additionally, he was ordered to pay a surcharge of £154 and costs amounting to £300. As part of his punishment, Glancey was disqualified from keeping any animals for a period of ten years, reflecting the seriousness of his neglect and the importance of safeguarding animal welfare in the future.
