CAMBRIDGESHIRE MAN JAILED FOR HORRIFIC RAPE AND MANSLAUGHTER
A man who raped and killed a woman in a Cambridgeshire hotel has been jailed.The naked body of Virginja Jurkiene, 49, of Wisbech, was found in a pool of blood in a bedroom at the Hare and Hounds Hotel in the town on 19 January.
She had met Dainotas Doblys, 48, who was living in Boston in Lincolnshire, through a "lonely hearts" advertisement in a Lithuanian magazine.
Doblys, who was convicted of her rape and manslaughter at a trial, was jailed for 16 years.
In June, Doblys was convicted of manslaughter and two counts of rape, but cleared of murder.
He had denied the charges and said the two had had consensual sex.
Cambridge Crown Court heard the pair had met in Wisbech on 18 January and booked a room at the hotel in North Brink.
They left to buy alcohol and food from a local shop before returning.
At about 11:45 GMT the following day, Doblys told hotel staff that Ms Jurkiene was dead in the room.
A post-mortem examination revealed she had died from "suffocation in conjunction with severe alcohol intoxication".
Following his trial, Cambridgeshire Police described the attack as a "horrific sexual assault".
In a statement released through police, Ms Jurkiene's family said: "This tragedy has shaken our lives enormously.
We experience sleepless nights, nightmares and the most horrible thoughts of the suffering mum went through.
We just want to know why he was so cruel to our mum.
These words are a goodbye to her, the dearest, the most loved mum." Doblys was jailed for 16 years at Cambridgeshire Crown Court earlier, and given a further four years on licence which will follow his release.
