CONNOR NAYLOR, BURNESIDE OFFENDER, SENTENCED TO 32 MONTHS FOR ONLINE SEX OFFENCES IN CARLISLE
A convicted child rapist from Burneside, Connor Naylor, engaged in explicit online chats with a 12-year-old girl and encouraged her to partake in sexual acts. Now aged 20, Naylor was originally sentenced in 2018 for raping a young girl while he was in his mid-teens.
He received a detention and training order and was placed on the sex offenders register for five years.
Between March and July 2020, Naylor developed an online relationship with a girl he met on a gaming website.
Prosecutor Kim Whittlestone explained to Carlisle Crown Court, "During this period, the defendant asked the victim for indecent photographs and also sent such images in return." The girl claimed to be 16, despite her father informing authorities that she was only 12, and she repeatedly misrepresented her age to Naylor.
In July 2020, the girl’s sister discovered evidence of the explicit chat, prompting police to investigate.
Examination of Naylor's phone revealed both still and moving images of the girl engaging in sexual activity on WhatsApp.
During police interviews, Naylor, of Hall Park, Burneside, acknowledged he was contacted by the girl’s father but claimed she stated she was 16 when challenged.
He admitted to four offences: causing a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity; causing a child to watch a sexual act; and possession of indecent photographs of a child.
Eight images were classified as category A— the most serious — while 50 were category C.
The court heard that Naylor was considered "emotionally immature," suffering from Asperger's syndrome and ADHD, having been bullied at school and struggling to form age-appropriate relationships.
A probation officer reported Naylor as "remorseful and reflective," noting that he had made no attempt to minimize his crimes.
Defense lawyer Jacob Dyer commented, "Of course Mr Naylor needs to be punished.
It is also significant he did not receive the early intervention he needed following the original rape offence." Judge Simon Medland QC sentenced Naylor to 32 months in prison and imposed a three-year extended licence period, citing the continued risk he posed to the public.
Addressing Naylor's parents from the courtroom gallery, the judge said, "You may not agree with what I have done, but I believe it was the right and necessary decision." Naylor was also ordered to adhere to strict terms of a prevention order and must remain on the sex offenders' register indefinitely.
