ELDERLY SUNDAY SCHOOL VOLUNTEER SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE

An 82-year-old man identified as Collin Evans, hailing from Ebbw Vale, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for abusing underage girls while serving as a Sunday school volunteer.

The court confirmed that Evans was convicted of 21 counts of sexual assault, with these offences occurring in the late 1990s across various locations.

Evans exploited his trusted position in the community, targeting girls under the age of 14 as part of his abusive behavior.

He was found guilty at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court and is now to be registered on the sex offenders’ register with an indefinite sexual harm prevention order against him.

The court's decision followed detailed evidence provided by the victims, some of whom spoke out after many years of silence.

Detective Constable Dewi Davies, who led the investigation, stated: “This individual abused his position of trust in the worst way – to abuse children.” She emphasized the lasting impact of such historical offences and encouraged other victims to come forward for support.

The assaults, committed during the late 1990s, took place in multiple locations, and the court’s judgment highlights the breach of trust and the severity of the crimes.

Evans's actions have brought lasting trauma to his victims, and the sentence reflects the gravity of his crimes.
