HACKNEY MEN COLIN TROTMAN AND GLENN DYETT GUILTY OF SEXUAL OFFENCES AGAINST VULNERABLE TEENAGE GIRLS IN CLAPTON AND HACKNEY
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local communities of Hackney and Clapton, two men have been convicted of a series of heinous sexual offences committed against vulnerable teenage girls. The offenders, identified as Colin Trotman, aged 45, and Glenn Dyett, aged 56, exploited their victims through online grooming before traveling to the seaside town of Southend in Essex to carry out their assaults.According to court proceedings, both men targeted their victims on social networking platforms, where they identified and manipulated young girls who were described by police as naive, troubled, and vulnerable. Over a period spanning from August to November 2012, Trotman and Dyett made multiple visits to Southend, during which they engaged in the sexual abuse of the girls. The offenders reportedly used alcohol and drugs to weaken the girls' resistance, making it easier to carry out their criminal acts.
The court heard that the victims, who were teenagers at the time, met the men on the seafront in Southend. When the girls refused to comply with their demands for sex, the offenders allegedly assaulted them in Trotman’s BMW vehicle. The severity of the crimes was underscored by the fact that the assaults took place in a private setting, with the offenders using their vehicle as a site of abuse.
Law enforcement officials arrested Trotman in February of the following year and Dyett in June, after three teenage girls came forward, accusing the men of rape and sexual assault. The case proceeded to a two-week trial, which concluded on the Friday prior to the report. Trotman, who resides on Wetherell Road in Hackney, was found guilty of multiple charges, including rape and one count of engaging in sexual activity with a child. Additionally, he was convicted of facilitating child sex offences on two separate occasions.
Glenn Dyett, from Elderfield Road in Clapton, was convicted of three counts of sexual activity with a minor. The court's verdict highlighted the gravity of their crimes and the betrayal of trust involved in exploiting vulnerable young girls.
DCI Simon Werrett, who led the investigation for the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, expressed his condemnation of the offenders’ actions. He stated, “The two men are despicable characters who not only sexually exploited and assaulted these young girls, but refused to admit their guilt and forced their victims to go through the harrowing experience of giving evidence and reliving their nightmares.”
He further emphasized the vulnerability of the victims, describing them as teenagers dependent on alcohol and facing difficulties at home. “They were naïve and troubled. At a time when society should have been supporting their development into young adults, these two criminals appeared and targeted them, destroying their futures,” he said.
DCI Werrett paid tribute to the courage of the young girls who came forward and testified in court, acknowledging that their bravery was instrumental in bringing Trotman and Dyett to justice. Their actions not only secured convictions but also helped protect others from falling prey to similar exploitation in the future.
