COLIN HAWORTH OF BURNLEY JAILED FOR DECADES OF SEXUAL ABUSE ACROSS THE UK
In a significant development in the fight against child sexual abuse, Colin Haworth, a 71-year-old man from Burnley, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after a series of heinous crimes spanning over three decades.The case, which was brought before Burnley Crown Court, revealed that Haworth had committed multiple acts of sexual abuse against eight children, including the rape of one young boy, with his offending behavior stretching from 1977 to 2014.
Haworth's criminal activities were not confined to his hometown of Burnley.
Evidence presented in court showed that he carried out his disturbing acts in various locations across the United Kingdom, including the remote coastal town of Drummore in Scotland and the seaside resort of Llandudno in Wales.
These locations, along with Burnley, formed the backdrop for a pattern of predatory behavior that lasted for over 35 years.
The court heard that Haworth was already serving a seven-year sentence at Stafford Prison for similar offenses committed in the years 2000, 2001, and 2011, involving two other victims.
However, the recent case uncovered a much longer history of abuse, with the earliest incidents dating back to the late 1970s.
Prosecutor Richard Haworth detailed the extent of the crimes, which included sexual assaults, indecent assaults, and in one particularly egregious case, the rape of a child.
The court was told that in 2017, one of the victims finally contacted the police to seek advice regarding the abuse they had endured.
Following this initial disclosure, numerous other victims came forward, revealing a pattern of sustained and predatory sexual activity by Haworth.
The defendant’s disturbing behavior was characterized by a disturbing attempt to normalize his actions; he referred to his abuse as a ‘spitting game,’ a term he used to make his conduct seem less abnormal.
The impact of Haworth’s actions was profound, with victims reporting long-lasting effects that extended into their adult lives.
Some victims described how the abuse had damaged their relationships with their own children, illustrating the deep and enduring trauma caused by Haworth’s manipulative and exploitative conduct.
Judge Jonathan Gibson addressed the court, emphasizing the severity of the crimes.
He stated, “The offences on this indictment involved eight separate victims.
The victims were all children, nearly all under the age of 13, with some being as young as three or four when the abuse began.
Your offending affected all of them, both as children and into adulthood, as we’ve heard from the victim personal statements.
This was conduct lasting most of your adult life.
It was manipulative, predatory, and highly damaging to the victims involved, and there’s no mitigation that can detract from that.” Haworth pleaded guilty to 33 sexual offences involving eight children, which included the rape of one child and an attempted rape of another.
In light of the gravity of his crimes, the court sentenced him to 23 years in prison, with an additional year on extended license.
Furthermore, Haworth was ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities to protect the community from further harm.
