CHRISTOPHER SELLMAN'S TRAGIC CRIME IN TUNBRIDGE WELLS AND SEASIDE TOWN REVELATION

In a case that has shocked the community of Tunbridge Wells and a nearby seaside town, Christopher Sellman, aged 26, has been released from prison after serving only 18 months of a five-year sentence for the manslaughter of his infant daughter, Tiffany. The tragic incident occurred in November 2008, when Sellman, who was left alone with the 25-day-old baby, caused her death in a moment of anger and frustration.

Sellman’s early release has sparked outrage among child protection advocates and campaigners, who argue that the justice system has once again failed to adequately protect vulnerable children. The circumstances surrounding Tiffany’s death are deeply troubling. According to official reports, Sellman, who was known to have a history of child neglect, was playing a computer game when her crying disturbed him. In a fit of temper, he forcefully slammed the tiny girl onto a baby changing mat, an act that resulted in her suffering severe injuries, including heart failure and bleeding to the brain. Despite frantic efforts by emergency services and Sellman himself, Tiffany succumbed to her injuries and died later in hospital.

The incident was investigated thoroughly, and in March 2010, Sellman was convicted of manslaughter at Maidstone Crown Court. During sentencing, Judge Mr. Justice Bean described Sellman’s actions as roughly handling the infant, emphasizing that although there was no intent to harm, his treatment of Tiffany was unlawful and directly led to her death. The judge also highlighted that Sellman was playing a computer game at the time and was annoyed by her crying, which contributed to his loss of temper.

Further scrutiny revealed that Sellman had a troubling history with child neglect. A serious case review conducted by Kent’s Safeguarding Children Board uncovered that information about his previous concerns and cautions had not been adequately shared with relevant social and health agencies. This lack of communication meant that opportunities to intervene and protect Tiffany before her death were missed. Relatives had also attempted to alert authorities about Sellman’s partner, Pamela Burdge, who was pregnant with Tiffany at the time, but their warnings were not acted upon. The report concluded that if Sellman’s risk had been properly identified and acted upon, Tiffany’s death might have been prevented.

On the day of her death, Sellman called an ambulance, claiming that Tiffany was losing color and had become floppy. Despite this, her condition deteriorated rapidly, and she was taken to King’s College Hospital in London, where she was pronounced dead. During the trial, Sellman’s account of the events was inconsistent, with at least five different versions of what had transpired. His defense argued that his actions were a momentary lapse, and that he had been subjected to mistreatment and assault while in prison on remand.

Child protection campaigners, including Shy Keenan and Sara Payne—whose daughter Sarah was murdered in 2000—have voiced their outrage over Sellman’s early release. They condemned the authorities for failing Tiffany once again, asserting that the system had let her down from the moment she was conceived. Sellman refused to comment when approached by The Sun, simply stating, “I’m not interested,” before retreating into the bail hostel where he is currently residing.

The Ministry of Justice issued a statement explaining that sentencing decisions are made by the courts and that under the 2003 Criminal Justice Act, offenders serving determinate sentences of more than 12 months are released on license at the halfway point, with time spent on remand taken into account. They emphasized that offenders on license are subject to strict conditions and can be recalled to custody if they breach their license terms. The case continues to evoke debate about the adequacy of current child protection measures and the justice system’s handling of such tragic cases.
