MAN WHO STOCKPILED OVER 43,000 INDECENT IMAGES OF CHILDREN SENTENCED
Charles Cornelius, aged 57 from Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, has been sentenced to three and a half years after a National Crime Agency investigation uncovered over 43,000 indecent images of children in his possession. The images included material generated through AI technology and manuals related to paedophilia written by Cornelius himself.
The NCA launched the investigation after receiving information that an account associated with Cornelius had uploaded ten indecent images of minors online.
At the time, Cornelius was living and working as a teacher in Thailand but returned to the UK in June 2022, during which he uploaded the illegal images.
He was detained at Manchester Airport on 9 August 2023 as he was re-entering the country, facing charges for possessing, producing, and distributing child abuse images.
During police interviews, Cornelius chose not to comment and was then released on bail with specific conditions.
The magistrates turned down an application for him to travel back to Thailand during the ongoing investigation.
Investigators examined his devices and found not only known child abuse images but also those generated by AI, along with prompts used to create them.
They also uncovered two manuals containing explicit content authored by Cornelius, despite efforts to encrypt his devices and hide the material.
With a history of teaching young children in various nations, Cornelius is believed to have undertaken an English teaching course for non-native speakers before he began working with the British Council in Thailand from 2012 onward.
He admitted guilt to all charges at Manchester Magistrates Court in September and was sentenced at Chester Crown Court on December 11.
