CHARLES BERTIE'S BRUTAL ASSAULT IN DUNDEE: COURT HANDS DOWN SEVERE SENTENCE

A man named Charles Bertie, aged 43, has been sentenced to serve time in prison following a harrowing incident that took place in Dundee. The court proceedings revealed that Bertie was responsible for detaining a woman within a flat in Dundee and subjecting her to a sustained and violent assault. The severity of his actions has led to a significant legal response, including an 18-month prison sentence and a nine-month supervised release order.

During the sentencing at Dundee Sheriff Court, Sheriff George Way emphasized the gravity of Bertie’s conduct. He ordered that Bertie would be prohibited from engaging in any intimate or sexual relationships without prior approval from his supervising officer. This restriction underscores the court’s concern over the potential risk Bertie poses to others, especially given the violent nature of his recent actions.

The court heard detailed accounts of the incident, which occurred between August 10 and 11 of the previous year. Bertie was accused of abducting the woman and holding her against her will for a prolonged period. The evidence presented indicated that Bertie subjected her to continuous physical assault, which included punching her, grabbing her hair, and pushing her against walls. The assault was described as brutal, with Bertie pinning her to the ground, pulling her hair repeatedly, and delivering multiple punches across her body. He also seized her wrists and chest during the attack, further demonstrating the violent and controlling nature of his behavior.

Photographs from the court show Bertie in the dock, and a statement from his solicitor revealed that he maintained contact with the complainant even after the incident. The solicitor noted that Bertie claimed to have been struggling with low mood at the time, which may have contributed to his actions. Despite this, Sheriff Way described the offense as “very grave,” highlighting the frightening and dangerous impact of Bertie’s conduct, regardless of any ongoing contact with the victim.

It was also revealed that Bertie has a prior criminal history. In May 2020, he was jailed for four months after biting a police officer’s finger during an incident. At that time, Bertie’s teeth were missing due to methadone use, which added complexity to the case. The court’s decision to impose a lengthy sentence and restrictions reflects its recognition of the seriousness of Bertie’s offenses, which include both assault and abduction, and underscores the ongoing concern for public safety in Dundee.
