CARLO NANI FROM RENFREW BANNED AFTER SEXUAL ASSAULT AND LURING CHILDREN

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Renfrew, Carlo Nani, aged 42, has been subjected to a series of legal restrictions following serious allegations of sexual misconduct and inappropriate behavior involving minors. The incidents took place earlier this year in Robertson Park, a popular local spot in Renfrew, where Nani was accused of assaulting a 16-year-old girl and attempting to lure a young boy back to his residence on Paisley Road.

According to court proceedings, the teenage girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was in Robertson Park on May 12 when she was approached by Nani. The court heard that Nani, during this encounter, hugged her and inappropriately moved his hands over her hips and back against her will. This act was deemed a sexual assault under Section 3 of the Sexual Offences (Scotland) Act 2009. The girl’s testimony described her feeling of being targeted and assaulted in a public space, which caused her significant distress.

On the same day, Nani was also accused of inviting a 10-year-old boy, also protected by legal restrictions from being named, to accompany him to his home. The court was informed that Nani had engaged in conduct that breached the peace by behaving in a disorderly manner and extending an invitation to the young boy, who was also present in the park. Nani’s actions raised serious concerns about his intentions and conduct around children.

During the trial at Paisley Sheriff Court, Nani denied the allegations. He claimed that he was simply walking his dog in the park on the day in question. Nani, who admitted to having been drinking, acknowledged that he might have asked the young boy to come to his house but insisted that he never had any physical contact with the girl. He further stated that he did not loiter or stare at the children, asserting that his conversation with the boy was merely to check if he was okay, as the boy was alone, and to assist him in retrieving his scooter from the girl.

Nani explained that if he had asked the boy to go home with him, it was solely to make a phone call to an adult, not for any inappropriate purpose. However, Sheriff Seith Ireland dismissed Nani’s version of events, finding him guilty of sexual assault for the inappropriate touching of the girl and of breaching the peace by inviting the boy to his home. The court’s decision was based on the evidence presented and the credibility of the testimonies.

Following the conviction, Nani’s sentencing was deferred to allow for background reports to be prepared. When he returned to court on the following Monday, the judge announced the outcome. Nani’s legal representative, Fraser Alexander, revealed that social workers had assessed Nani as being unfit for unpaid work, which influenced the court’s decision.

Ultimately, Sheriff Ireland imposed a three-year Community Payback Order (CPO) on Nani. This order requires him to be supervised by social workers and to attend alcohol counseling sessions when directed. Additionally, Nani was banned from having any unsupervised contact with individuals under the age of 18 and was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for a period of three years. It is important to note that since no unpaid work was mandated, the CPO does not carry a punitive element but serves as a supervision and monitoring measure to prevent further offenses.

The case has highlighted ongoing concerns about safeguarding minors and the importance of strict legal measures to prevent individuals with a history of inappropriate conduct from having unsupervised access to children in communities like Renfrew.
