RENFREWSHIRE DOMESTIC ABUSER JAMES MCGARRY DIES AFTER BRUTAL ATTACK
A man from Renfrewshire, who was incarcerated after violently assaulting his girlfriend to the point of severe facial injuries, has recently died.James McGarry, aged 24 at the time, was sentenced to nearly five years’ imprisonment after he shattered every bone in Michelle McCormack’s face during an assault in December 2018.
The attack occurred at her flat in Linwood, where McGarry, intoxicated with cocktails, repeatedly struck the young mother, causing fractures across her entire face.
The Daily Record reports that McGarry, who passed away unexpectedly on April 11, is set to be buried on May 6.
His death notice described him as a "beloved son, adored cousin, family member, and dear friend to many".
Before his conviction, court proceedings revealed that McGarry falsely told ambulance responders that his blood-covered partner had accidentally hit her head on drawers and fallen face-first, claiming he had been cuddling her at the time.
Judge Lord Mulholland, presiding over the case, stated that these claims were lies and that McGarry was responsible for the injuries.
After the attack, McGarry contacted a friend via Facebook, mentioning Michelle McCormack’s name and saying, "She is unrecognisable.
I have done her in." It was this friend who called emergency services, discovering McGarry outside the flat covered in blood.
Paramedics found McCormack with a badly swollen and bruised face, her eyes shut tight.
Michelle McCormack, who also sustained injuries to her skull, hands, and ribs, recalls only being repeatedly punched before regaining consciousness in hospital.
Doctors reported injuries including fractures throughout all areas of her face, displaced upper and lower jaws, and significant swelling, necessitating complex surgery.
She was placed in a high dependency unit due to concerns over her breathing, caused by her swollen tongue and mouth.
Medical specialists confirmed that such injuries would have required considerable force.
McCormack was later discharged but medical staff could not confirm if she would fully recover.
The court records detailed the brutal nature of the assault and McGarry’s remorseful message prior to his death, emphasizing the severity of the attack and its lasting impact.
