CATCHING THE EVIL: CARL MARLAND OF ILFORD SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC SEXUAL ABUSE OF CHILDREN IN MANCHESTER

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community, Carl Marland, a 58-year-old pub landlord from Ilford, London, has been convicted of a series of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of young girls. The crimes, which spanned several months and involved multiple victims, culminated in a trial at Manchester Crown Court, where Marland was found guilty of over 20 separate offences.

According to court proceedings, Marland targeted several girls aged between eight and sixteen, grooming them with gifts, money, drugs, and alcohol to manipulate and control their actions. His predatory behavior was not limited to grooming; he committed multiple sexual assaults, including raping an eight-year-old girl. During one particularly terrifying incident, after assaulting the young girl, Marland threatened her life, warning that he would kill her if she disclosed what had happened. Marland’s criminal activities were not confined to London. Evidence revealed that he traveled from Ilford to Manchester almost weekly between June 2020 and December 2020, visiting the victims and their families to carry out his abusive acts. He would often drive the girls around in his car, which became a venue for much of the abuse. The grooming process involved giving the girls gifts such as clothing and money, as well as providing them with drugs and alcohol to facilitate his control over them.

The police investigation was triggered when a mother of one of the victims discovered inappropriate messages from Marland on her daughter’s phone in November 2020. This discovery led to his arrest in January 2021. During the arrest, authorities seized a 'Rambo-style' knife and Marland’s mobile phone, which he had used to contact and manipulate his victims. The evidence collected during the investigation painted a disturbing picture of a man who had systematically exploited and sexually abused vulnerable young girls.

Marland’s conviction includes a lengthy list of serious charges. He was found guilty of three counts of raping a child under 13, causing a child to watch a sexual act, five counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, and assault of a child by penetration. Additional charges include two counts of voyeurism, two counts of making indecent images of children, three counts of sexual activity with a child, engaging in sexual communication with a child, and three counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. Furthermore, he was convicted of supplying class B drugs, as well as class C drugs, to minors.
