HIGH WYCOMBE MAN WHO GAVE BABY BRAIN DAMAGE BY 'MAN-HANDLING' HER AVOIDS JAIL
A man from High Wycombe who caused brain injury to an infant by rough handling her has avoided imprisonment.Carl Johnson, aged 28 and residing on Crest Road, pleaded guilty to child cruelty and received an eight-month prison sentence, which was suspended for two years.
During his appearance at Aylesbury Crown Court on Friday, it was revealed that in 2018, Johnson’s actions towards the baby led to seizures, with medical examinations uncovering a brain bleed.
Around that same period, Johnson was observed in his home kneeling on the floor and “growling”.
After the child was hospitalized, doctors confirmed she had sustained brain damage.
Medical experts stated that the injuries were “non-accidental” and that other signs, such as bruises, were consistent with shaking.
Johnson’s defense team expressed that he was “extremely distressed” and claimed he was unaware of his capacity for such behavior, highlighting the serious repercussions.
The court was told that three years later, the child remains paralyzed on one side and has difficulty with speech.
Judge Francis Sheridan described the rough handling as having severe effects, including bruises, scratches, and a seizure that could have been life-threatening.
Johnson was sentenced to a term suspended and ordered to complete 20 days of rehabilitation and 150 hours of unpaid community service.
